Avatar makeup

It’s a while ago now! But before Christmas, I had a request of a friend, asking me to help him with his costume. It was for a party, and he was willing to go all out. I suppose he came to the right person! ๐Ÿ˜Š

He wanted to be like a character from James Cameron’s Avatar. We discussed the details and decided to try and make the nose shape and do full upper body makeup.

I started with the nose, because I had to make it in advance. The technique I chose was latex, mixed with flour, applied on my foam head, Charlie.

We had a fitting session, because Charlie didn’t have the same nose as my friend. After some adjustments we had our nose!

I finished the edges with some nose putty where needed, the rest is latex. The edges are something I really want to learn more about!

Then I added pointed ears, painted him blue, added contouring, stripes, eyemakeup, and he had gotten a wig, contacts and accessories.

We had a lot of fun and his party was a success!

Halloween 2016

By now it’s December, so I’m running way behind on posting this. But, those of you who follow my other social media like instarainbow, are able to see all the snaps I take with a phone ๐Ÿ™‚

Halloween started early this year! I was planning with our party hostess in the beginning of September, I think.. She told me the theme ideas she had, and it became an ‘Enchanted Forest’. It’s a beautiful theme, very broad, you can do basically anything fantasy, I really enjoyed it! ๐Ÿ˜€

It was also very early in the season that I settled on a general idea of what I would want to do with this theme. This year we really wanted to succeed on having a squad of people that actually kept their costume in line with the theme and we did! But I wanted something that would be better than last year.
I woke up in the middle of the night and started sketching, so the sketch below in the album is that original idea. Once it was set on paper I was focused on finding out details on how to accomplish things, ย the hair structure for example. But this was the plan from the beginning and I didn’t wander astray!

So what is it that I am? I was inspired by the ‘children of the forest’ from the Game of Thrones TV show. I wanted something like that, but with wings, elf ears, and a less I-was-literally-attached-to-a-tree kind of look. More of a magical look. A tad more fancy. But on the other hand, I didn’t want to be a fairy, I was going to be an evil, depressed version when it came to costume. I did obviously have a party and smiled and whatever, but the costume was intended as Evil Fairy.
Conclusion: I was a Forest Child, along with the rest of the girls ๐Ÿ™‚

My friends and boyfriend are also shown in the album. The girls were dressed as a Fawn, another Forest Child That Walked Out Of The Forest With Moss, there’s my friend I did makeup for who’s sort of my Evil Fairy Sister, and my boyfriend was Robin Hood with scratches that I made.

The day itself was so much fun. My entire hair/makeup took over 6 hours. I love this. This is commitment!
And there was my friend, who was able to help out a little with painting my back, we had a really lovely day, then we all did makeup together at my house and we had pizza, and it was a really good day ๐Ÿ™‚ Then we went to the party and I was tired AF because I’d been up since early and just exhausted from the whole day haha!

But it was a good Halloween year. This is what I live for.

For the occasion, I had dyed my hair (!!) with a colouring shampoo. It’s not permanent, it washes out after three washes or so. It was fine! My hair is not damaged and it’s back to normal now ๐Ÿ™‚ Hairstyle: Sansa Stark.

I used scarwax to create a broader bridge of the nose and a strong browline. These edges were not blended perfectly like the professionals do it, but for me, this was my best attempt so far. Gotta start somewhere. Oh, and I created gills on my arms. I don’t really know why, I wasn’t a fish. It just was cool and went with the look.

Paint: Mehron, obviously. Yes, I was wearing contacts. I also used some powder products, most of those would have been Sugarpill, Sleek or BHcosmetics.

Costume: The top was a simple top that I shredded. The skirt was made by myself. The wings were made from scratch by myself using wire and kitchen wrap (iron it so it melts) and everything with leaves is also just crafted with leaves that I got at some shop.

If I missed anything, if you have any questions, let me know! Enjoy!

Everything has been documented, all your questions (HOW DID YOU DO THAT?) will be answered once I’ve edited the video!!!! But now I just want to sleep ๐Ÿ˜›

The makeup is not my own original design, credit goes to Madeyewlook, the amazing Lex โค

HALLOWEEN PART 1

HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night was pretty cool! I went to a party of the theatre society and damn, those people know how to dress up! It was a very good night, though I was tired from also working all day, and I knew I would have a VERY long and busy day today, because it’s finally arrived: It is Halloween today! ๐Ÿ˜€

Please note that these pictures were for yesterday. Today I am planning on something entirely different…
I went as my Elven character Ireth, in full costume ofcourse, but you’ve seen that before. I used the video of Lex for the makeup, so all credit goes to her!

  • For the white foundation I used a white cream makeup that was only 1 euro, found at the local SoLow shop. Please remember that Illamasque is very expensive when it doesn’t have to be! ๐Ÿ™‚ I made my whole skin pale, if you browse through my latest updates you’ll see that I’m actually quite tan compared to these photos. Also, when I use a flash in pictures, I’m white.

I wish you all a very, very nice Halloween today, I hope you’ll enjoy it, no matter what your plans are. Also don’t forget that my giveaway is open until Monday!
Have fun today!

The Hobbit: the Final Adventure of the 21st Century Elf Ireth

Yesterday, I went to see the last installment of the Hobbit trilogy. I won’t give away too many spoilers, but I can tell you: it was good. Despite some differences with the book (which, were already obvious in the previous films), I really enjoyed it!

And did you see the credits art! I loved them..

Bravo to all the people that worked on this film. I know there are a lot of you. My deepest respect to all of you ๐Ÿ™‚

It was finally time to wear my complete costume and become my alter ego Ireth again. For pictures of the entire costume, click here.
Below you will see the proces of my transformation ๐Ÿ˜‰

I started with the ears. You can see how I made my ears on a previous blog post, but the best explanation for the entire thing is this video by Klaire de Lys, I made mine exactly the same way, but her video shows every step perfectly.

IMG_2996

My hair is naturally this long and thick, I did not use extensions.

I tied a section from above, then I made a section from my ear up to the tied section, on both sides of my head. I split this new section into two: the lower half for the locks in front of my ear, the other half for a regular braid towards the back of my head. Then these two braids come together with the tied hair from above. After that I made a fishtail braid with the tied hair and some extra hair from the back of my head. I pulled it loose like Kayley Melissa always does, especially in the top of the braid.

I found this really old necklace that I wore to my first prom, and I pinned it below the start of the small braids with bobby pins.

For makeup: I used a light beige shimmer eyeshadow on the lid, then I used some brown mascara. For the lips, I went with a simple layer of Purol to saturate them, and I used BB cream on my face, with a light powder over it. Since my face was too warm, I didn’t add any contour or blush, that is way to much for elves… Oh, and I did my brows with that HD brows set I accidentally got at IMATS ๐Ÿ™‚

IMG_2998

And that’s it! That’s how you become an elf!

It was quite an adventure to go to the cinema. I drove this time, and first, I had to make sure my cloak was ‘on board’ ๐Ÿ™‚

While we got out of the car in the parking lot, it was freezing cold! But, I did everything for art, so I left my coat in the car and went like this, in my cape, to the cinema. While we were walking in, I was the object of stares. There were many people in a long waiting line, so, that was fun!

I just love doing this. Though some people can be rude!ย Not that I mind, I mean, well, there was an actual elf, the closest to reality most of them had ever seen. And it might help promote Cosplay and open people’s minds and hearts.

Again, if you are going to watch it, I ask you, watch the credits! The people who worked on this film deserve your 5 more minutes of attention!!!
Enjoy it, I definitely did ๐Ÿ™‚

Other very important news! Saturday I went to Eindhoven with one of my best friends, she had a photoshoot there. She asked me to come along as her MUA, which was GREAT! I loved it! I got to do my friends’ makeup and learn from a wonderful photographer! This will also give me the opportunity to add beautiful photos to my portfolio as an artist, so it’s really great. This was my first time at a photoshoot, so, yeah, progress!! Results will be uploaded as soon as I get them ๐Ÿ™‚

The Complete Elven Costume pattern

It’s here! It’s here!

I know I said this multiple times already, but, the Elven costume cloak is still the biggest attraction to this blog thanks to a link on Pinterest. I cannot thank the person who did that enough, just, please read this someday? Thanks so much!
Especially now, with Halloween behind usย and December 10 coming closer (the movie actually came out YESTERDAY in the UK!), more and more people have come to check out my version. I told you some time ago that I would be uploading a pattern for everything, that day has finally arrived! ๐Ÿ™‚ Continue reading

Painting progress May + updates

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the silence.. I know it’s terrible..
As usual though, I have worked on things.. They’re just not finished yet. The main reason for my lack of posting this month is the following:
My laptop screen has a huge crack in it, it’s been there for 2 months now. I’ve found a person who is going to fix it, but the screen is a special type (apparently?) and now it takes weeks to get a new one. Now I try to use my laptop as little as possible because it’s really annoying, plus I haven’t saved any photos on the laptop, because otherwise I have to make yet another backup which takes a lot of time. So, I still have all photos on my card and simply forget to upload them…

Firstoff: the painting on the wall. There’s some more detail in it, I gave life to the castle in the clearing, the path has more definition, just all over more definition..

IMG_1977

Second: I was crocheting another scarf with the broomstick stitch, same as the red one I did last year. It’s not finished yet.

Third: For the painting that is shown above, I made a model of the castle that is in the clearing.. Like, a crafted model with my materials from back in the day when I was still an architecture student instead of constructive engineer?
I present to you, a scale model of the Castle of Hogwarts:

IMG_1856

The model was something I’ve been wanting to do for quite a while, I researched all the places within the castle once, I had maps of all the floors, it’s crazy really.. But, yes, I love Harry Potter and I believe the magic never ends. You should check out this song! I know, off topic, but it’s cool! There’s quite some names missing though, haha (:
So, after I finished drawing and painting the little castle on the wall, I had no purpose for the model.
No, there’s not going to be some contest to win this thing. I already gave it away, to a friend who’s even a bigger fan of the whole world of magic then I am (Hi Andrew!) and I am 100% sure the model is in good hands with him ๐Ÿ™‚

Fourth: Sure everyone remembers this guy! :

IMG_0122

This is my most viewed post, which is wonderful, and now it will get an expansion! Whoohooo! I told you last time that I was working on something big, well, that would be a COMPLETE COSTUMEย to go with this pretty cloak. It’s almost done, I’m still working on a very detailed embroidery and after that I want to create an actual pattern for you guys! Which will take us to the next update:

My wrist. I had an inflammation in the joint. Is that how you call this in English? Not sure. But I hope you understand. In Dutch it’s: ontstoken polsgewricht.
This happened out of nowhere, it’s quite annoying. The fact that I had a mountain of homework and studyingย to doย did not ease my mind about this.
And so, I agreed that I should probably give everything a break. No crocheting, knitting, anything that might do more damage. I have to use my arm a lot for school already, so, yes, this really sucks. Now, at night, while watching TV or something, I have nothing to DO!ย Fellow crocheters and knittersย will know ๐Ÿ˜›
Luckily there’s only a few more weeks of school left, I’ve got 2 more projects which are not individual, meaning more work during the week and less during weekends (:

But there’s always something to brighten my days! In just a few weeksย I will be walking around at IMATS LONDON!!!! Finally!! Counting days here.. I haven’t made a complete wish list yet, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to tell me! One thing’s for sure: my #1 stop is at Sugarpill. Oh, happy day ๐Ÿ™‚

Love,

-M.

PS: I read ‘The Silmarillion”. I feel like Galadriel, knowing everything. It was great (:
