The Pussy hat movement

About a week ago I decided to make myself a pussy hat. Some of you might know them, but for those of you wondering what I’m talking about, here’s the thing:

It’s a crocheted hat with a rectangular shape, that’ll give the impression of cat ears when you put it on. And it’s very bright pink!

At the moment I feel like the world is being torn apart. Elections have caused uproar, and in my country elections will be held next month. I find the aftermath of the election in the US quite disturbing, and let me be clear! I do not agree with this person’s opinions and what he’s said, and I defy his actions. For people that have followed me for some time, you know that I am a supporter of the LGBT community. This is my continued support for equality, for human rights. I am siding with the sisters and brothers of the Women’s march, for all the reasons you could think of.

I’m now creating pussy hats on request for people in my city, Groningen. If slowly but surely the city turns pink, I’ll be superhappy. This feels like an amazing good cause to give my free time to. It’s important that we will express our opinions and not be silenced.

Together, we can create the world we want to live in.

Love,

-M.

I sewed a dress!

A little while ago I spontaneously decided to do another sewing project. I absolutely loved sewing my costumes and I wanted to do something again, but I didn’t need a costume. I did have this one dress that fits me very nicely and I really liked the idea of having another dress like that.

So I thought, let’s just do that! Now? Now!

It was on a thursday that I made up my mind, while I had time to go to the markets for fabric on friday. No market on friday in the city. I went to a shop instead, which was waaaayyy more expensive than I remember my hometown market to be. Called mom, asked if there was a market for fabric on Saturday morning, because I wanted to go to my parents on saturday. I don’t own the sewing machine, it’s my mothers.
The answer was that the market was right then, on friday morning, and would be over in an hour. Even if I travelled to my hometown right away, I would be too late.
So screw that, I went to the store again, found the prettiest thing ever that is very very me, and ofcourse also a zipper.

Then I worked on the dress for two weekends and I did it! HAH! Out of nowhere I decided to make my own dress and for a first time, I think this was pretty brilliant.
I could not have done this without my mother, she taught me everything I know about sewing (which is still pretty basic) and somehow, it just helps when she’s around ❤

Those of you that follow my instagram have already seen two little sneaky peeks, but here’s a little shoot of me in the dress.
I do not know why, but WordPress turns the last two pictures less blue. The first one shows the colour as it is. On my computer they’re all good, except not on the website. Does anyone have any tips on that? Like, it’s only the dress colour that looks weird, reds and greens are fine 🙂

Another thing that I mentioned on instaRainbow before, is that it’s a very educational project. There’s a lot of insight needed when making a piece of clothing. My respect for seamstresses has gone up A LOT. I really respect that the clothing industry is hard work and I completely understand why boutiques and little clothing shops are expensive: it’s because of all the hard work.
The amount of money I spent on this dress for materials equals the amount for which you can buy a complete dress at any shop that is relatively cheap.
I get it that when you make tons of the same thing, buying materials is cheaper, but still. It’s absolutely unbelievable how dresses can be sold for so little money, while I now know that I spent over 10 hours of time working on this simple piece.

It makes me feel somewhat guilty.

I really really hope that at some point, the world will be a better place where the women, and no longer children, that work on these pieces, will receive a fair treatment.
If you’re shocked and willing to change something, take a look at organisations that fight for a just system.
I’m afraid that if we all want to solely have clothing that was made in a fair way today, realistically we should all start sewing for ourselves again. Gotta start somewhere.
But that’s a lot of fun too, I assure you! 😀

Thanks again to my wonderful mother, and thank you all for the continuous support of my art projects.

-M.

13 nights until Halloween

Practising the makeup for a Team Evil member. This needs contouring, more blood and a better job on the black on the eyelids.

Making prosthetic ‘sticker’ wounds for the party attendees that don’t zombiefy themselves. I plan to paint them and add blood when placing them onto someone, not in advance.

This week!

So, it’s been a busy week, and I could make seperate posts of everything, but I prefer doing this all at once, so here we go!

Last sunday was my Carnival makeup job number 1, for Roseline.  I met her for the Halloween makeup job I did last year and she called saturday afternoon. We settled with a neutral version of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, the version done by Alexys from MadeUlook, because she wasn’t really in for crazy facepaint. It was a big challenge for me, to not go all the way with the crazy, but we made it and Roseline was satisfied 🙂

Monday and Tuesday were the other makeup jobs for Carnival, the girls wanted a Sugarskull, this particular one by Lindsay. I practised on myself first, so they were able to give feedback.

The girls wanted to go all the way with pink, glitter and everything couldn’t be crazy enough, so that was good. I really liked doing dramatic, theatrical, extravagant makeup that says BOOM in your face, I was trying to find ways to make the colours pop more and more, something I never really do at home. I completely changed the products that I used, but I think it turned out pretty good 🙂
The girls actually won the Best Dressed contest of Melody, so YAY 😀

The last few days of the week I finished a piece of furniture, it’s a gift for one of my best friends, she and her boyfriend are now living together. It’s supposed to be something to put plants on, like herbs. They really liked it 🙂
This is the crafting project I have been working on for a few weeks, and because of this guy here, I wasn’t painting when the sun was shining. But it was fun! A challenge, but it was great!

Other news:
The video thing with the spaghetti bridge is over, not going to happen anymore. I’m sad, but it’s ok, it was kind of something I expected, I had to contact all these people I didn’t really know and make sure they replied to a producer, but not everyone did, so, due to the law system in the US with rights and whatever, they can’t use the clip.

The Elven Costume continues to be fantastic, a collegue is borrowing it now for her daughter, which is lovely, I’m not really using it anymore. I should try to keep Ireth alive though! Let me know if you have suggestions?

I also have a new video coming up, though it’s not finished, ofcourse… I have the rough video editing done, now it needs a voiceover and music, so the whole sound editing is yet to be done, sometime soon. I saw the weather for tomorrow is fantastic, so tomorrow I should paint my wall!

Conclusion: lots of things that I knew were coming, are now finished. This was the best Carnival I ever had, due to all the makeup! Still, there are a lot of projects that have yet to be finished 🙂

100 Followers GIVE-AWAY! – CLOSED

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!!

Today we are going to celebrate the fact that I now have a 100 followers on this blog!!!!

I’m so grateful, as I told you many times, for all the people who continue to support my work and appreciate the art of Makeup. I love every single one of you.

To show my thanks, I will be giving away a product that I got for you at IMATS London last June. I knew this day would come, so I bought a lovely palette for you:

This is the NYX Cosmetics Glitter Cream palette, which has a lot of different colours. I tried to find this product online, but all I saw where smaller versions that are no longer available on the NYX website, so, I figured this would be special!

I have opened the palette, only to show it on camera, I have not swatched these because that would be unhygienic. I swatched one or two colours at IMATS though, and I can tell you this: the top layer of the product does not contain a lot of the ‘cream’, it’s mainly just loose glitter. The reviews I found say that you should rub a little harder/deeper to get to that creamy texture.
I’m pretty sure we all have some sort of purpose for loose glitter though 😉 Just look at these colours!
