Catching up: My homemade wardrobe since September

As you might know, I’ve gotten myself into sewing as well as everything else displayed here. It is actually really becoming a thing to me. By now I’m in a stage where I no longer want to buy clothing from stores. Especially fast fashion stores. I admit, it’s nice to get some basics, like thights. I can’t do underwear yet. And I’m not making pants or jeans anytime soon, that’s something I think would be extremely difficult and my sewing machine is not up for thick fabrics!

It’s for all the ethical and environmental reasons… I feel like people know about the problem with cheap and fast fashion but the majority ignores it and pretends it’s something that doesn’t happen or isn’t a very direct problem that they can change.

So I decided to change. Baby steps.

First up, a dress I remember finishing in December:

It’s from the first issue of ‘Knip’ I ever got, August 2016. That’s a Dutch sewing magazine.

Second: another dress. Same issue of the magazine 🙂

I actually changed this one quite a bit, because the middle part was a hot mess the first time I tried it on. I shortened the top part a lot and sewed it back on.

Third: I made a rockabilly dress with a petticoat! It was in honor of the theatre play we did with the theatre society called ‘the Deep Blue Sea’, which is set in the 50’s. I really wanted to make this and wear it for the show. It turned out pretty amazing and I wear it to work too 🙂

The dress pattern is the Katjusha pattern on Burda. The petticoat was made following this video on Youtube.

Lastly, I made this skirt not too long ago, without any pattern.

At the moment I’m not sewing anything, but I do have many ideas of what to do with the pile of fabrics I got myself a few months back!
I’m in preperations for my summer getaway to the World Bodypainting Festival! 🙂 I’m so excited and I can’t wait to meet the wonderful artists that will be there! My expectations are high and I’m really really looking forward to my workshops!

Also, Game of Thrones is baaaaaaack!

I made a skirt!!

Sooo, I really got into this sewing thing. As in, I also got my own machine (real cheap, such a great timing!) and I’m superhappy with that. If you missed that bit, and other snippets, follow my Instarainbow!

By now I have bought fabric for at least 3 more projects that are more ambitious that this skirt..

Anyway, I’m really really proud because this has been the most difficult, technical piece I’ve ever done, seriously. I’ve learned a lot from this one. And I’m so happy!

img_75931img_75911img_75861

As in the photo above, it’s a circle skirt. It goes in a full circle you guys 🙂 The fabric is light and soft and it flies around me when I’m cycling. It’s lovely and exactly what I was hoping for.

This was also the first time I used a pattern. I got it in this magazine I have a subscription on now ( it was a gift 🙂 ) and that is called Knipmode. It’s a Dutch sewing magazine, the one I used is from August ’16 and the skirt is number 6.
I got started with the pattern size 38, and then I decided to adjust the pattern to my personal preference of a higher, tighter waist and a shorter skirt in general.

So, really happy, and proud, and also happy that I’m posting again on here!
There are a number of other things I need to tell you about:

  • Theatre. I’m part of the crew of this theatre piece called When a Witch is in Love. It’s something I’m doing with friends here, and I’m the makeup artist!
Now, if you’re near Groningen in the beginning of October, I would love it if you could come and see our show! If not, I will be posting snaps on my insta of the journey too 🙂
  • Halloween! On instarainbow I will post all things related to Halloween preperations as #halloweeniscoming. I have figured out my outfit and everything already! I’m in full preperation mode and I’m so excited!!! You?
  • Personal stuff: I’m not sure if I should write about this stuff in public. But in short, my house is sort of under construction as they’re renovating my windows. I am finally getting double glass!
  • More personal stuff: I have some… physical issues. With my hip. And tomorrow is my first ever hospital appointment with a surgeon.
  • I’m also still working full time and there’s a part time masters degree coming on top of that in… TWO WEEKS *gasp*

I need to take it easy. I am, and that is why my projects are not as frequent as they were. They are getting bigger though. And it will be less frequent, probably, since, you know, masters plus working full time, that is more than just a full time job. Literally.
My biggest concern is my physical problem though. And I hope the play will work out great, and I have Halloween to look forward to. That’s not too much 🙂

I sewed a dress!

A little while ago I spontaneously decided to do another sewing project. I absolutely loved sewing my costumes and I wanted to do something again, but I didn’t need a costume. I did have this one dress that fits me very nicely and I really liked the idea of having another dress like that.

So I thought, let’s just do that! Now? Now!

insta 1

It was on a thursday that I made up my mind, while I had time to go to the markets for fabric on friday. No market on friday in the city. I went to a shop instead, which was waaaayyy more expensive than I remember my hometown market to be. Called mom, asked if there was a market for fabric on Saturday morning, because I wanted to go to my parents on saturday. I don’t own the sewing machine, it’s my mothers.
The answer was that the market was right then, on friday morning, and would be over in an hour. Even if I travelled to my hometown right away, I would be too late.
So screw that, I went to the store again, found the prettiest thing ever that is very very me, and ofcourse also a zipper.

Then I worked on the dress for two weekends and I did it! HAH! Out of nowhere I decided to make my own dress and for a first time, I think this was pretty brilliant.
I could not have done this without my mother, she taught me everything I know about sewing (which is still pretty basic) and somehow, it just helps when she’s around ❤

Those of you that follow my instagram have already seen two little sneaky peeks, but here’s a little shoot of me in the dress.
I do not know why, but WordPress turns the last two pictures less blue. The first one shows the colour as it is. On my computer they’re all good, except not on the website. Does anyone have any tips on that? Like, it’s only the dress colour that looks weird, reds and greens are fine 🙂

Another thing that I mentioned on instaRainbow before, is that it’s a very educational project. There’s a lot of insight needed when making a piece of clothing. My respect for seamstresses has gone up A LOT. I really respect that the clothing industry is hard work and I completely understand why boutiques and little clothing shops are expensive: it’s because of all the hard work.
The amount of money I spent on this dress for materials equals the amount for which you can buy a complete dress at any shop that is relatively cheap.
I get it that when you make tons of the same thing, buying materials is cheaper, but still. It’s absolutely unbelievable how dresses can be sold for so little money, while I now know that I spent over 10 hours of time working on this simple piece.

It makes me feel somewhat guilty.

I really really hope that at some point, the world will be a better place where the women, and no longer children, that work on these pieces, will receive a fair treatment.
If you’re shocked and willing to change something, take a look at organisations that fight for a just system.
I’m afraid that if we all want to solely have clothing that was made in a fair way today, realistically we should all start sewing for ourselves again. Gotta start somewhere.
But that’s a lot of fun too, I assure you! 😀

Thanks again to my wonderful mother, and thank you all for the continuous support of my art projects.

Love,

-M.

Driving home for Christmas

IMG_6107

It was a bright and early morning when I left the city. This picture is taken on the road from the station to the highway and I loved it.

I go back to my parents’ pretty often, though for the holidays I brought my camera. That way I’m now able to present the latest version of my wall painting 🙂
To be honest I don’t even recall what I did most recently, I suppose it’s the darker green colours in the front.

IMG_6125

Most importantly, what I want to show you today is this:

IMG_6121

Remember when my laptop died? Did you read my complaints about my computer not being able to handle photoshop and other programs that require a beast type system because it’s too old?

Well, I saved for a new system and decided to assemble it myself, since it’s cheaper and a lot of fun! I built my own computer!
The picture shows my happiness after the first round of testing if I installed things correctly. I did, since the message on the screen was exactly what I wanted to see. That was earlier today 🙂
Tomorrow I’m expecting the last part to arrive, which is my optical drive, that wasn’t neccesary for the first part of assembling, I can just pop that in tomorrow and it’ll be fine. Unfortunately, tomorrow I’ll be gone for a shopping trip (that’s just too bad 😉 ) so I’m going to install my Windows on Tuesday, along with all the other basic things.
For those of you that are interested, I can make a seperate post dedicated to the new computer system. If you’d like to see that, let me know in the comments.

All of this is very good news, because with this new baby, I will be back to video editing within a few days! Hooray!

Oh, and ofcourse, we celebrated Christmas for three days with the family here.
I hope you all had a great time, even though it’s such a forced social event.

OH!! Did you all see the new Star Wars movie yet? GO SEE IT!
I went as Leia! 🙂

I can totally film and produce a hair tutorial for this thing in a week or so! 😀

This week!

So, it’s been a busy week, and I could make seperate posts of everything, but I prefer doing this all at once, so here we go!

Last sunday was my Carnival makeup job number 1, for Roseline.  I met her for the Halloween makeup job I did last year and she called saturday afternoon. We settled with a neutral version of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, the version done by Alexys from MadeUlook, because she wasn’t really in for crazy facepaint. It was a big challenge for me, to not go all the way with the crazy, but we made it and Roseline was satisfied 🙂

IMG_1

Monday and Tuesday were the other makeup jobs for Carnival, the girls wanted a Sugarskull, this particular one by Lindsay. I practised on myself first, so they were able to give feedback.

IMG_3198 IMG_3206

The girls wanted to go all the way with pink, glitter and everything couldn’t be crazy enough, so that was good. I really liked doing dramatic, theatrical, extravagant makeup that says BOOM in your face, I was trying to find ways to make the colours pop more and more, something I never really do at home. I completely changed the products that I used, but I think it turned out pretty good 🙂
The girls actually won the Best Dressed contest of Melody, so YAY 😀

IMG_3272

The last few days of the week I finished a piece of furniture, it’s a gift for one of my best friends, she and her boyfriend are now living together. It’s supposed to be something to put plants on, like herbs. They really liked it 🙂
This is the crafting project I have been working on for a few weeks, and because of this guy here, I wasn’t painting when the sun was shining. But it was fun! A challenge, but it was great!

Other news:
The video thing with the spaghetti bridge is over, not going to happen anymore. I’m sad, but it’s ok, it was kind of something I expected, I had to contact all these people I didn’t really know and make sure they replied to a producer, but not everyone did, so, due to the law system in the US with rights and whatever, they can’t use the clip.

The Elven Costume continues to be fantastic, a collegue is borrowing it now for her daughter, which is lovely, I’m not really using it anymore. I should try to keep Ireth alive though! Let me know if you have suggestions?

I also have a new video coming up, though it’s not finished, ofcourse… I have the rough video editing done, now it needs a voiceover and music, so the whole sound editing is yet to be done, sometime soon. I saw the weather for tomorrow is fantastic, so tomorrow I should paint my wall!

Conclusion: lots of things that I knew were coming, are now finished. This was the best Carnival I ever had, due to all the makeup! Still, there are a lot of projects that have yet to be finished 🙂

-M.

The Hobbit: the Final Adventure of the 21st Century Elf Ireth

Yesterday, I went to see the last installment of the Hobbit trilogy. I won’t give away too many spoilers, but I can tell you: it was good. Despite some differences with the book (which, were already obvious in the previous films), I really enjoyed it!

And did you see the credits art! I loved them..

Bravo to all the people that worked on this film. I know there are a lot of you. My deepest respect to all of you 🙂

It was finally time to wear my complete costume and become my alter ego Ireth again. For pictures of the entire costume, click here.
Below you will see the proces of my transformation 😉

IMG_2988

I started with the ears. You can see how I made my ears on a previous blog post, but the best explanation for the entire thing is this video by Klaire de Lys, I made mine exactly the same way, but her video shows every step perfectly.

IMG_2993

IMG_2996

My hair is naturally this long and thick, I did not use extensions.

I tied a section from above, then I made a section from my ear up to the tied section, on both sides of my head. I split this new section into two: the lower half for the locks in front of my ear, the other half for a regular braid towards the back of my head. Then these two braids come together with the tied hair from above. After that I made a fishtail braid with the tied hair and some extra hair from the back of my head. I pulled it loose like Kayley Melissa always does, especially in the top of the braid.

IMG_2997

I found this really old necklace that I wore to my first prom, and I pinned it below the start of the small braids with bobby pins.

For makeup: I used a light beige shimmer eyeshadow on the lid, then I used some brown mascara. For the lips, I went with a simple layer of Purol to saturate them, and I used BB cream on my face, with a light powder over it. Since my face was too warm, I didn’t add any contour or blush, that is way to much for elves… Oh, and I did my brows with that HD brows set I accidentally got at IMATS 🙂

IMG_2998

And that’s it! That’s how you become an elf!

It was quite an adventure to go to the cinema. I drove this time, and first, I had to make sure my cloak was ‘on board’ 🙂

While we got out of the car in the parking lot, it was freezing cold! But, I did everything for art, so I left my coat in the car and went like this, in my cape, to the cinema. While we were walking in, I was the object of stares. There were many people in a long waiting line, so, that was fun!

I just love doing this. Though some people can be rude! Not that I mind, I mean, well, there was an actual elf, the closest to reality most of them had ever seen. And it might help promote Cosplay and open people’s minds and hearts.

Again, if you are going to watch it, I ask you, watch the credits! The people who worked on this film deserve your 5 more minutes of attention!!!
Enjoy it, I definitely did 🙂

Other very important news! Saturday I went to Eindhoven with one of my best friends, she had a photoshoot there. She asked me to come along as her MUA, which was GREAT! I loved it! I got to do my friends’ makeup and learn from a wonderful photographer! This will also give me the opportunity to add beautiful photos to my portfolio as an artist, so it’s really great. This was my first time at a photoshoot, so, yeah, progress!! Results will be uploaded as soon as I get them 🙂

The Complete Elven Costume pattern

It’s here! It’s here!

I know I said this multiple times already, but, the Elven costume cloak is still the biggest attraction to this blog thanks to a link on Pinterest. I cannot thank the person who did that enough, just, please read this someday? Thanks so much!
Especially now, with Halloween behind us and December 10 coming closer (the movie actually came out YESTERDAY in the UK!), more and more people have come to check out my version. I told you some time ago that I would be uploading a pattern for everything, that day has finally arrived! 🙂 Continue reading
